Road project causing major delays in Danville

DANVILLE — A safety improvement project in Danville is also causing very long traffic backups.  PennDOT crews are working on the $645,000 project along a section of Route 54 says spokesman Rick Mason. Motorist say it’s been gridlock during peak travel periods but its for a permanent improvement.

“It involves safety improvements that will extend the acceleration and turning lanes along Route 54 from just north of Montour Street to Route 11.”

The work also includes placing new drainage inlets, new concrete median and resurfacing of the existing roadway.  Mason says most of the work is being done during the daytime, which could cause an increase amount of traffic.  “The area does have a heavy traffic volume so motorists should expect delays throughout the project.  The reason we have a lane restriction is because we have significant drops where the drainage work is taking place and crews aren’t able to fill them in daily in order to reopen the lane.”

Further into the project, Mason says crews will be doing night paving.  All work is expected to be complete by mid-July. (Sara Bartlett)
