Should the minimum wage be raised?

SUNBURY – There is a proposal in Washington about increasing the minimum wage and a local activist and columnist says the wage needs to be raised.

Nicole Faraguna said, “There is a proposal in Congress. Obama proposed an increase to $9.00 in his State of the Union, which really doesn’t do a whole lot. Congress has proposed an increase of $10.10 over two years, once the legislation is enacted, and that would help. They say that in order for the wage to be adjusted for inflation, it should actually be $10.74.”

That’s Nicole Faraguna, who was a guest on WKOK’s On The Mark program today talking about why the minimum wage should be raised. Faraguna said, “I think that it’s something that is not only good for the economy, but it’s the right thing to do…it’s the moral thing to do. We currently have a minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. That equals about $15,000 a year. It’s not a lot of money. You’re not doing a whole lot of living on $15,000 a year.”

Faraguna said a lot of people are working for minimum wage or less and are still barely making it. According to the Economic Policy Institute, an increase in the minimum wage would benefit 30 million people.
