Sunbury Rotary names 59th Citizen of the Year

SUNBURY — The Sunbury Rotary Club hosted their 59th Annual Citizen of the Year banquet Thursday evening and John Shipman was honored for his service to the city. Shipman said he was honored to receive the award and spoke about his love for the city.

He said, “I grew up here. There are lots of wonderful people here. There is lots of work to do here. I enjoy all the interaction with all the people that are on the boards for different organizations. It’s just been a wonderful time.”

Aside from being a Rotarian, Mayor David Persing said Shipman has made quite a contribution to the city. He said, “John was on city council with me back from 2003 to 2009. John has always been a great supporter of the city. He does everything you ask him to do.”

Shipman is overseeing the Albright Church project, where the church will be converted into a community arts center in Sunbury. Persing says he has great confidence in the project because Shipman is in charge. (Ali Stevens)
