Sunbury to host big billiards tournament
SUNBURY — Sunbury is gearing up to host a big billiards tournament. Each year the Fraternal Order of Eagles holds a pool tournament across the state. This year the nearly 800 shooters will be coming to Sunbury for a second time.
Sunbury Eagles No. 503 treasurer Jeremy Frits said, “In 2010 it was here in Sunbury for the first time and we partnered with the city of Sunbury at the Sunbury Community Center. We were able to fit in more tables than they could anywhere else in the state. The people around the state really enjoyed the venue here.”
The tournament was originally scheduled to be in Littlestown, Adams County, but a scheduling conflict left the fraternity in need of a new venue. Frits said, “Our state office called us and asked if we could host it in little notice, because everyone really enjoyed coming here. We said that we would.”
The city of Sunbury is expecting over 1,000 people to be visiting for the tournament. Sunbury Mayor David Persing said that is a lot of people spending money on hotels and restaurants. “This is just another positive for the city,” he said.
The tournament will be May 3-5 at the city’s ice rink. The Eagles are considering the possibility of holding an open tournament the Thursday before the Eagles tournament, which would be open to all shooters. (Codi Jade)
