Telephone scam targeting Northumberland County
SUNBURY — A phone scam is reportedly targeting people in The Valley. The Northumberland County Sheriff’s Department and the Northumberland County Prothonorary and Clerk of Courts are warning citizens to be wary of suspicious phone calls.
Sheriff Robert Wolfe issued a news release Tuesday outlining the threat. He said, the perpetrator identifies themselves as a clerk in the prothonotary’s office and tells the victim that deputies of the sheriff’s office are on their way to collect monies for bad debts. The sheriff and prothonotary reportedly investigated several similar incidents Friday. They were found to be a scam perpetrated by a group out of New York.
If you receive such a call you should immediately contact authorities. The sheriff emphasizes: Do not make payments over the phone. (Codi Jade)
