Toomey: Illegal children at border is humanitarian crisis
UNDATED – A “complete humanitarian crisis” is how one U.S. Senator describes illegal immigrant children fleeing to the United States.
Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) says there is a misconception in Central America that if you get your child to the US, all will be fine, “Many of these families have some family connection already in the states. The idea is to get the kid across the border, they go through a perfunctory hearing and then they have a license to stay in America and they find their family here. Presumably, other family members will follow.”
Toomey says the cycle needs to stop before it gets worse, “We don’t have the facilities to accommodate tens of thousands of kids. I think first and foremost we need to make it clear that there is no such easy way to get into America. We are going to have to take these kids and bring them back to where they are from. Otherwise, the message will be reinforced that it is okay to keep sending the kids over. We have to bring an end to that.”
U.S. Congressman Lou Barletta (R-PA) has been very vocal about this topic, criticizing the Obama administration for not taking action on illegal children crossing the border. The President last week said that our immigration system was broken and there was a need to pass “common sense immigration reform.” (Sara Bartlett)
