Six pigs killed in a two-alarm barn fire
NEW BERLIN – Six pigs were killed in a barn fire last night outside New Berlin. The fire started around 11:30 p.m. at the Saurers Haven Farm along Route 304. Robert Saurers reports hearing a loud “boom” which triggered the fire, and he believes it may have been a furnace malfunction.
The two-alarm fire destroyed the barn and contents, which included hay and other equipment. Audrey Saurers is daughter of Robert Saurers and said, “This is sheer devastation, but we will rebuild.”
They were able to get the steers out of the barn safely, but six pigs were killed. The family says there was an insufficient amount of water available while battling the blaze, which kept the farm from being saved. No injuries were reported and the investigation will continue into what caused the fire. (Ali Stevens/Sara Bartlett)
