VIDEO HERE: Camp Mount Luther turns 50
MIFFLINBURG — A big birthday celebration is coming up this weekend. Camp Mount Luther is turning 50-years-old. Chad Hershberger is Executive Director of the Camp. He said they’ve come a long way in the last 50 years.
“We were founded in 1963, and the ground that we are on now was an apple orchard. The Lutheran church bought the property and turned it into a camp,” Hershberger said. “On June 30 we are having a big birthday celebration. That will be the actual 50th Anniversary of the dedication day of the camp. We’ve really grown and built new facilities and added programs through the years since then, and this year we want to take some time out and celebrate all that’s been done in the last 50 years.”
To celebrate, there will be an open house on Sunday, followed by a worship service with several special guests. The campers will also be creating a time capsule to bury for future campers to dig up at the 75th anniversary.
Tara Barnard of Millerstown said Camp Mount Luther means a lot to her, and she looks forward to celebrating its birthday. “This is the 50th anniversary, my first year here was the 40th anniversary. It’s been 10 years. It’s definitely a huge part of my life… I would not be who I am today without camp.”
Hershberger said everyone is invited to the 2:00p.m. open house. Guests will have the opportunity to walk around camp, visit with friends, swim, play frisbee golf and volleyball or walk the nature trail.
