ALERT PIC

POINT TWP — A preliminary report says a truck driver from Canada fell asleep when his tractor-trailer veered off of Route 147 in Point Township Thursday morning.  Route 147 was closed between 7th Street and Ridge Road through mid-afternoon according to PennDOT.

Point Township Police Chief Joshua VanKirk says, “Officers arrived on the scene and found a tractor-trailer had gone off of the road near Fourteenth Street.  Rescue crews did a fabulous job cutting the truck apart using every tool they had.  They did get the driver out alive.  He is at Geisinger Medical Center, but his status is unknown.”

A portion of Route 147 between Water Street and Ridge Road was closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene says VanKirk, “He was hauling bleach and one of his saddle tanks also ruptured, so crews are working to clear the scene.  We had some debris that made it down to the railroad beds, so just a huge impact.”

Crews from Point Township, Northumberland and Sunbury all responded to the scene.  The driver has not yet been identified. (Sara Bartlett)
