VIDEO HERE: High school women get powerful motivational message
LEWISBURG – Students from 16 schools districts gathered at Bucknell University Tuesday for the Young Women’s Futures Symposium. A Junior Achievement Program, the day focuses on young women in 10th, 11th and 12th grades, and is designed to help with their future after high school.
Kalene Buss is a junior at Lewisburg Area High School. “I had a lot more fun than I planned to. You get to meet people and work with people you have never met. It’s a lot of fun.”
Throughout the day students get to hear from business woman in The Valley, who share what their job entails. They also get to learn more about their leadership styles and make a personal budget.
“That will help me manage my money in the future so I will know how much to save and what I can spend my money on,” says Eli Martinez, a Shikellamy High School junior.
Harriet Turk has been the keynote speaker at the symposium for several years giving girls a motivational and relatable speech. “We have so much strength from the inside out; we just have to believe in it. We have to stop giving away our power to other people simply for them to like us. We have to stop trying to be what everyone else wants us to be. Most importantly, we have to start figuring out who we are.”(Sara Bartlett)
