SHAMOKIN DAM – Special Olympics of Northumberland and Snyder Counties is looking for both athletes and volunteers for their spring sports.  Paul Bettendorf of Lewisburg is a Special Olympics athlete and a Global Messenger.  “A Global Messenger is when you try to get more athletes and volunteers to help Special Olympics.”

Arden Miller is the Volunteer Public Relations Coordinator for the Special Olympics and says their mission continues to be able to provide athletes with sports training and competition. “School districts do a good job of trying to keep you physically fit, but it is very hard to be on a sports team.  Here you are on a sports team.  It is meaningful competition, which means you compete against people your age group and ability level.  You have the opportunity to learn, compete and succeed.  It is the sports, the competition and the social aspect.  It’s wonderful.”

There are a number of different opportunities to volunteer with the Special Olympics.  For more information on volunteering, becoming an athlete or giving a donation go visit their website, Facebook page or call 570-884-1023 (Sara Bartlett)
