VIDEO HERE: Students celebrate communication with the CSIU
MONTANDON – Heavy rain did not stop the Cat in the Hat from coming to town at the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit in Montandon.
Wednesday was the annual Celebrate Communicate Day where students with a range of disabilities from seventeen area school districts gather to meet and have fun. Joan Hauck is a speech pathologist for the CSIU. “It is a day where the students know what to expect. They have the vocabulary to use and they can experience it with other kids and adults that can communicate with them using all different devices.”
Students get to participate in the day of activities, which are centered around a different theme every year says program supervisor for special education Jennifer Williams. “This year’s theme is Dr. Seuss, so all of our games, activities and crafts deal with that.”
Hauck says students look forward to the day each year. “It is a day built around the students’ needs and abilities. It is built around success for kids who may not possess a lot of success when they are out and about other places.”
Superintendents of each of the school district also came for a portion of the day to interact with their students. Over 100 students attended.
