Budget cuts may effect conservation districts

SUNBURY — Will state budget cuts hurt conservation efforts? That was one of the many questions during a meeting of the Northumberland County Conservation District Thursday.

Recent grants and funds will help to enhance the service provided by Northumberland County Conservation District, but there are still worries that possible budget cuts could lead to loss of services for constituents as well as potential loss of personnel.

State Senator John Gordner (R-27, Berwick), Representative Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-108, Sunbury), and Representative Kurt Masser (R-107, Elysburg) assured the conservation districts that although tough budget cuts need to be made, the district has friends in Harrisburg.

Executive Director of Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts Robert Maiden urged the legislators to do what they can to avoid cuts.

Gordner said, while he knows the value of conservation districts, the state is bringing in less than they had projected for this year due to a decreased in spending.  The state’s fiscal year starts July 1. (Jillian Lewis)
