Wreaths for Warriors this weekend in the Valley

SUNBURY — Holiday wreaths will be placed on veteran’s graves and at military memorials in the Central Susquehanna Valley this weekend by members of the Wreaths for Warriors committee. John Deppen is acting chairman of Wreaths for Warriors and says Snyder and Union County volunteers will be going to cemeteries to place wreaths on veteran’s graves on Saturday. On Sunday, they will be visiting cemeteries in Sunbury and Northumberland.

Deppen said Wreaths Across America began in 2006 and a local resident advocated for a local effort. He said, “Local citizen Chris Kerwin said why can’t we do something like this in the Susquehanna Valley. It began with a very small effort in 2006 with a few dozen wreaths in Northumberland County. We have since grown to more than 1,200 wreaths being placed on Veteran’s graves in three different counties.”

Kohl’s Stony Hill Tree Farm near Washingtonville donates the wreaths to the Wreaths for Warriors and an American flag is also placed on the grave. Volunteers include members of the local American Legion Posts and the VFW and Boy Scout troops. A brief ceremony will be held in Northumberland’s Riverview Cemetery on Sunday at 3 p.m.
