Wreaths for Warriors volunteers busy in rain

SUNBURY –Holidaywreaths were placed on veteran’s graves and at military memorials in The Valley over the weekend. Members of the local Wreaths for Warriors committee and volunteers were out in rain Sunday and cool temperatures Saturday, placing hundreds of wreaths on veteran’s graves.

 

Friday John Deppen, acting chairman of the local Wreaths for Warriors effort said Wreaths Across America began in 2006 and a local resident advocated for the effort.  He said, “Local citizen Chris Kerwin said why can’t we do something like this in theSusquehannaValley. It began with a very small effort in 2006 with a few dozen wreaths inNorthumberlandCounty.  We have since grown to more than 1,200 wreaths being placed on Veteran’s graves in three different counties.”

 

Kohl’s Stony Hill Tree Farm near Washingtonville donates the wreaths to the Wreaths for Warriors and an American flag is placed on the grave.  Volunteers include members of the local American Legion Posts, the VFW, volunteer fire companies and Boy Scout troops.  A brief ceremony was planned in Northumberland’ sRiverview Cemetery Sunday3 p.m.  (Ali Stevens)
